tmux Windows

A tmux window is like a browser tab — a full-screen terminal you can switch between within a session. The prefix is Ctrl+b.

Window shortcuts (after pressing prefix Ctrl+b)

KeysAction
cCreate new window
nNext window
pPrevious window
0-9Jump to window number
,Rename current window
wList windows (interactive picker)
&Kill current window

From the command line

tmux new-window -n editor
tmux rename-window -t work:0 shell
tmux select-window -t 1

Naming windows matters

With htop in one window and vim in another, naming them (Ctrl+b ,) makes the status bar at the bottom instantly readable instead of a row of numbers.

Practice tasks

  1. Create a new tmux window named 'editor'
  2. Rename a tmux window
  3. Create yet another window for monitoring logs
  4. Rename a second window using its session:index target
