What is Linux?
Linux is a free, open-source operating system kernel created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Today it powers everything from servers and smartphones to supercomputers and embedded devices.
Why Linux?
- Free & open source — anyone can use, modify, and distribute it
- Stable & secure — most web servers in the world run Linux
- Powerful — full control over your system
- In-demand skill — essential for DevOps, sysadmin, and development
The Terminal
The terminal (also called shell, command line, or console) is how you communicate with Linux. Instead of clicking icons, you type commands.
This might feel strange at first — but it becomes incredibly fast and powerful once you learn it.
Your First Command
Let's start with the simplest command — echo. It prints text to the screen.
echo Hello, Linux!
