Mission: Killed in the Night

Ticket #7344 — the nightly reports keep dying. Read it:

cat ~/ticket-7344.txt

Find out what ends the report worker, and set the server up so it gets through the night.

Useful commands:

systemctl status report-worker
journalctl -u report-worker -n 10
sudo dmesg -T | grep -i "killed process"
free -h
cat /etc/report-worker/worker.conf

💡 Two fixes make it safe: a number of workers the memory can hold, and swap as a safety net for a busy night.

Practice tasks

  1. Find out how the worker died
  2. Find the kernel's message about it
  3. See how much memory the server has
  4. Make sure there are 2 GiB of swap — also after a reboot
  5. Run at most 4 workers — they have to fit in the memory
  6. Start the worker again — and see it stay up
